ASHRAE Competition Win

Senior Project Team Takes First Place

The senior project team of Brian Kaufman, Nick Leeburg, Tony Lin, and Micah Reich won the 2013 ASHRAE Student Design Competition in the Applied Engineering Challenge category.  Their project was a Portable Solar-Powered Freezer designed for portability, ruggedness, effective off-grid operation, and cost-effective assembly using readily-available materials.  This type of technology would be invaluable to developing countries, who typically have no means to store, preserve, and transport perishable food and medicines.  The team will be travelling to the national ASHRAE conference in New York this January to accept their award.  The faculty advisor for this project was Dr. Nicole Okamoto.

Another senior project team consisting of Luis Reyes, Michael Gallegos, Yiu Yip, Derek Delgado, Jin Yu, and Robert Deaver, placed third in the same category.  This team was jointly advised by Drs. Okamoto and Yee.

The faculty advisor for the ASHRAE student club is Dr. Okamoto.
