About the RSMI Lab
The Robotics, Sensors, and Machine Intelligence (RSMI) Laboratory at San Jose State University aims at educating both graduate and undergraduate students on the latest sensor and robotics technologies, as well as smart devices to meet today’s increasing demands in industry, home automation, healthcare, and homeland security. The RSMI also provides a platform and tools for students to conduct the cutting-edge research and society-orientated projects.
Currently the RSMI lab is equipped with variety of educational and industry robots – Cartesian (1), SCARA (3), Articulated (3), PUMA (2), Rhino (1), Shakey (1), as well as many other mobile (e.., vacuum cleaner, lawn mower), and entertainment robots (e.g., dog, panda, superman). We also have many student built robots, including pipe climbing robots, pipe crawling robots, house guard robots, walking-assistant robots, a robotic martial arts trainer, and a humanoid robot.
The lab also have several sensor stations, including flowrate sensor station (using four different flowrate sensors to measure flowrate), machine vision station (several black-white and color CCD and CMOs sensors for defect detection, pattern recognition, and automatic feedback), capacitive sensor station (capable to measure as small as 10-16 Farad change), water leak sensing station (using pressure, inductive, resistive, ultrasonic, acoustic sensors for leak detection). A collaboration with other labs at SJSU allows students to learn how to fabricate an MEMS sensor themselves.
The lab just updated its new 10 computers. LabVIEW, Matlab, Adept Windows are installed in these computers for students to learn, simulate, control, and operate all robots and sensor stations. Several DC and AC power suppliers, instruments (e.g., function generators, signal processors, resistance/capacitance/inductance meters), and simulator for controller design and tuner are also provided in the lab.
