Summer in the City Camp
The Summer in the City Camp at San José State University was established in 2007 to offer junior high and high school students a week of musical immersion and social interaction with one another. Young musicians have the opportunity to work with instructors from San José State University School of Music and Dance as well as renowned musicians from across the country. Campers participate daily in one primary ensemble (choir, band, or orchestra) led by distinguished conductors. Campers also attend sectional rehearsals, participate in a chamber ensemble (small ensemble), and select one or two elective classes to take for the week. Evening concerts and recitals throughout the week round out a full week of stimulating music activity.
Summer in the City camp staff work closely with campers to enhance each student's understanding and proficiency in his or her specialized areas of interest. Every primary ensemble and chamber ensemble performs a concert at the end of the week. The Friday evening performance includes the chamber recital and Jazz Band concert. The Saturday final performance provides campers the opportunity to enjoy and share the results of their hard work with each other as well as friends and family! In addition, campers are encouraged to perform for their peers in the annual camp solo competition and camp variety show.
