SJSU WELCOMES DR. CORIE BROWN
New Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education
Dr. Brown completed research on collaboration in higher education, as well as how to better serve marginalized students in the choral classroom. Her prior work in Michigan, Chicago, and Colombia, South America led her to explore how choral education can evolve to meet the needs of all students. As a conductor and mentor with the Fundación Nacional Batuta in Colombia from 2012-2014, she helped develop their choral department and will continue her research of other El Sistema-based projects in the future.
As a contralto, Dr. Brown has appeared with the University of Colorado Boulder University Singers, the University of Oregon Chamber Choir, and the award-winning Chicago Chorale. She has sung under maestros Helmuth Rilling and Matthew Halls at the Oregon Bach Festival and has toured internationally to Europe, Colombia, and Argentina. In 2017, she performed at Carnegie Hall as part of an intergenerational women’s chorus.
Dr. Brown values choral music as a tool to connect people, as well as a lens through which to interpret the world. She enjoys performing everything from early music compositions to works by living composers and has edited and arranged, recently publishing with Hal Leonard in the Andrea Ramsey Choral Series. Dr. Brown was a semi-finalist in the SWACDA conducting competition.
Dr. Brown holds degrees from Alma College, University of Oregon, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting and Literature from the University of Colorado Boulder. Her primary conducting teachers include Dr. Gregory Gentry, Dr. Andrea Ramsey, Dr. Sharon Paul, and Dr. Will Nichols. She is a member of ACDA, NCCO, and NAfME.
