The SJSU Symphony Orchestra is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at SJSU. Music majors focusing on string performance participate in Symphony Orchestra as their major ensemble. Auditions for the Orchestra occur one or two days before classes begin each semester.
The core repertoire of the Orchestra spans a broad range of eras and styles.
Plans for the 2021-22 season include a performance of guest composer Stephen Hartke's Ship of State, Joseph Schwantner's New Morning for the World, based on texts by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; providing dance music for the Beethoven Ball; performing with tenor Pasquale Esposito in venues in Saratoga, Pleasanton, Castro Valley, and the Monterey Theater in downtown San José; performing in the School of Music & Dance's Kaleidoscope!; performing an operatic double bill of Mozart and Robert Xavier Rodriguez's La Curandera at the Hammer Theater; and more!
The mission of the orchestra is to deliver an outstanding music education for our students, and to perform at the highest level with passion, energy, and commitment. String auditions will be Wenesday, Aug. 18, 2021, 1:00-4:00PM. Be prepared to perform two contrasting pieces: one that demonstrates your musicality, one that is more technical.
