Master's of Science, Family Nurse Practitioner Admissions

To apply to the FNP program, please complete the graduate studies application on Cal State Apply.

The FNP program is located under extended studies. Please see the advising slides and program website for more information regarding the application. It is strongly encouraged that you attend an information session before applying.

Additional information that will be requested as part of your graduate studies application:

  • Current resume
  • Statement of professional goals:
    • Why do you want to be a nurse practitioner?
    • What are your goals after obtaining your degree?
  • Two letters of reference, either professional or academic
  • Copy of a current, unrestricted California Registered Nursing License

Once students are formally accepted into one the program, additional health documents will be required (titers, background check, drug testing, malpractice insurance) administered through third party document tracker.

The family nurse practitioner graduate programs will be accepting applications for Fall 2023 applications October 1, 2022 through March 1, 2023.

Prerequisites

A grade point average of 3.0 (B) is required in the last 60 units of the undergraduate program coursework. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 will be evaluated on an individual basis and may be admitted with a conditional status.

Application Process

  • It is strongly encouraged that you attend an information session before applying.
  • Please see advising slides before beginning your application
  • Complete the Office of Graduate Studies application in Cal State Apply, which includes the school of nursing application. For applicant support during the application process, contact Cal State Apply directly at 857-304-2087. There is a non-refundable application processing fee
  • Applications will be accepted October 1, 2022 - March 1, 2023
  • Select the Nurse Educator option when you are applying
  • Submit transcripts as directed (see Have Applied and Next Steps for more information)

Additional Information 

The following information will be requested as part of the application:

  • Current resume
  • Statement of professional goals: Include why you want to be a nurse educator and your goals after obtaining your degree
  • Contact information for two professional or academic references
  • Copy or documentation of your current, unrestricted California Registered Nursing License 
Foreign Educated Students
  • Submit TOEFL score
    • 550 paper based
    • 213 computer based
    • 80 internet based

Note: If you have a master’s or doctoral degree from the U.S. and a bachelor’s degree from another country, we require a WES (World Education Services) transcript evaluation of the bachelor’s degree.

Once students are formally accepted into the Master’s program, additional health documentation will be required (evidence of immunization, background check, drug testing, etc) all administered through a third party document tracker. Please note that CalState Apply and third party document trackers have separate fees.

Timeline of Admissions Notification 

Students will be notified of an admission decision four to six weeks after the March 1 deadline.
