Principal William Thomas Lucky

  • Born April 24, 1821 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

  • Received A.B. degree in 1841 from McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois. Also earned an M.A. degree and became a minister of the Methodist Church.

  • Fifth principal of the California State Normal School from 1868 - 1873.

  • Was involved in selecting the new location for the Normal School outside of San Francisco and served as principal when the School moved to San Jose (at Washington Square) in 1871.

  • Read Principal Lucky's Report of the State Normal School prepared for Superintendent of Public Instruction, Oscar P. Fitzgerald, dated December 20, 1869. In the report, he explains the School's needs for a permanent location outside of San Francisco, more reference books for the library, more apparatus for labs, and a boarding house for the young ladies.

  • Normal School alum, Charles Edwin Markham, reflects on Principal Lucky in 1889:

[A] feature of our student life was Dr. Luckys morning lecture on teaching. These lectures occupied five months in their delivery. ... Under Dr. Lucky the discipline was strict, yet kindlythe hand of iron in the glove of velvet. He was a man of impressive dignity, robust head and shoulders, countenance frank and open as the day, bold crag-like brows, and a smile that lighted up the face in a wonderful manner.
