Bio

Dennis L. Wilcox is professor emeritus of public relations and past director of the School of Journalism & Mass Communications at San Jose State University. He is the lead author of Public Relations Strategies & Tactics (11E), Public Relations Writing & Media Techniques (8E), and Think:PublicRelations (2E), and  Public Relations Today: Managing Conflict and Competition.

Dr. Wilcox is a past chair of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Educator's Academy, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) Public Relations Division, and the PRSA Silicon Valley chapter. He also has served on the PRSA national board of directors and is a recipient of that organization's "outstanding educator" award. He is an accredited (APR) member of PRSA and also a member of the College of Fellows.

Dr. Wilcox is active in the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) and the Arthur W. Page Society, a group of senior communications executives. Dr. Wilcox has served as a visiting professor at universities in Australia, Thailand, and South Africa. He has been a Fulbright scholar at the University of Botswana, and also a professional-in-residence at the ministry of foreign affairs in Estonia. He has conducted professional workshops and done consulting in such diverse nations as Latvia, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, Ukraine, Singapore, Chile, Argentina, India, and Thailand. In 2012, he conducted research on press freedom in Tbilisi, Georgia, as an Embassy Policy Specialist (EPS) grant from the U.S. State Department.  More recently, he was a keynote speaker at a symposium on the future of books at the University of Bucharest in November 2014.

Dr. Wilcox is on the editorial board of the two leading refereed journals in public relations. PRWeek, in 2000, named Wilcox one of the top ten public relations educators in the nation. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bucharest. He was honored in 2006 by the University of Girona in Spain with the Xifra Heras award for outstanding contributions to global public relations education. In the same year, he was named an honorary adjunct professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2008, he was first foreigner awarded honorary membership in the Public Relations Society of Serbia. He also received the annual faculty award from San Jose State University's international division for outstanding contributions to international education. In 2009, he was recognized by the Public Relations Society of India for "academic excellence in global public relations."
