Bio

I am a proud Bay Area native. Born in Oakland, I graduated from Palo Alto High School and the University of California, Berkeley, before leaving the Bay Area to start a far-ranging academic odyssey. I earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and I have taught History at seven universities in five states. I'm glad to be home in the Bay Area, where I have taught at San José State since 2005. I was chair of the History department from 2016 to 2024. I have published articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, essays, and reviews on diverse subjects ranging from California history, politics, nativism, migration, and mythology to the baseball business, social memory, McCarthyism, and the progressive movement.  Click on "Publications and Presentations" below to access them.  I teach a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses about California history and various modern U.S. history subjects.  I enjoy teaching what I want to teach to students who want to learn!
