Bio

Jesús Covarrubias was born and raised in Salinas, CA. He is a 1988 graduate of Alisal High School. In 1992 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chicano Studies/Music at U.C. Berkeley before returning to Salinas where he began teaching elementary school. In 1995, Jesús received a Masters Degree in Education and Teaching Credential from Stanford University. As an educator, he has taught Elementary School to Migrant students and American History to High School students. He is currently a Tenured Professor of Ethnic Studies and Mexican American Studies at San Jose City College (1997-present). In 2007 he completed doctoral coursework towards a Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Sociology of Education at U.C. Santa Cruz. In 2008, he received an “Outstanding Faculty Advisor” award for his work with the student organization, Movimiento Estudantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A)

In addition, Professor Covarrubias is a Senior Lecturer at San Jose State University (1998-present) in the Chicana & Chicano Studies Department. He has lectured on various aspects of Mexican American Culture, History, Chicano/Latino Music and the Latina/o Educational pipeline.

Jesús is also a very accomplished musician and composer. He plays the guitar, Keyboards, Alto Saxophone and Accordion. In 1989 he joined “Dr. Loco’s Rockin’ Jalapeño Band” which went on to become one of the Bay area’s most critically acclaimed Latino Bands. He collaborated on 3 albums and has toured many parts of the United States performing various genres of Latino Music as well as presenting Lecture-demonstrations on the history of Latino music. His other projects include working on the world premiere stage production of Victor Villaseñor’s “Rain of Gold” as Musical Director for the Western Stage in Salinas and Music Director for El Teatro Campesino’s “La Pastorela” and “Virgen de Tepeyac” productions. He has recorded and produced music with his current band, “Los Niteliters” from San Jose. The band has recorded 3 albums and performed throughout the bay area, often donating their time for community causes.  Finally, In 2022, Professor Covarrubias launched a solo music project, "Chuy" performing popular covers and released an EP, "Simplified".
