Description
Thematic & historical examination of localized religious traditions; e.g., Shamanic, Animistic, Polytheistic, Pantheistic. These traditions will be studied through their arts, music, myths, life patterns, cosmologies and contact between indigenous and universalizing religions.
Extended Course Description & Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Examine indigenous & Pagan religious traditions in diverse cultural & historical contexts,
including:
- the practices & perspectives associated with shamanism, animism, polytheism & pantheism
- the history, development & practices of Wicca & other Contemporary Pagan religions in the U.S.
- Examine the relationship between indigenous & Pagan religions, including:
- the integral role of myth, ritual, performance, & the creative arts in religion
- the intersections of religion & ecology
- the formation of new & alternative religious movements
- questions of syncretism & cultural appropriation in religions
- questions of authenticity & “otherness” in religions & cultures
- Describe & analyze what Pagan religions can teach us about the study of religion & the nature of religions in general
