Bio
Dr. Nicole Zhang is an Assistant Professor and Graduate Coordinator at San José State University’s Valley Foundation School of Nursing. Her work focuses on advancing nursing practice and education through the thoughtful integration of health technologies, with a strong clinical and scholarly emphasis on urology and urinary health.
Dr. Zhang’s research program centers on technology-enabled approaches to urologic and urinary care, including the development of noninvasive monitoring and diagnostic tools to support bladder health, urinary function, and clinical decision-making. She leads interdisciplinary projects involving wearable sensing systems for bladder volume monitoring, with applications across aging populations, surgical care, and individuals with neurologic conditions.
In addition to device-focused research, Dr. Zhang has an established record of scholarship in nursing informatics, digital health, and evidence-based practice. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including Evidence-Based Nursing (BMJ), the JMIR family of journals, and Urologic Nursing. Her forthcoming Springer textbook, Nursing Informatics and Technology: Integration in Practice and Education, provides a practical framework for integrating emerging technologies into nursing education and clinical practice.
As an educator, Dr. Zhang teaches across undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Her teaching emphasizes applied learning, clinical relevance, and professional preparation, with particular attention to preparing nurses for leadership roles in complex healthcare environments. In her role as Graduate Coordinator, she oversees curriculum development and program advancement, ensuring alignment with contemporary nursing standards and evolving practice demands.
Dr. Zhang is nationally active in professional leadership and service. She serves as President-Elect of the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) and is a Fellow of the Academy of Urologic Nurses and Associates (FAUNA). Through this work, she contributes to national guidance, professional education, and practice standards in urologic nursing.
