Thomas Esmeralda has worked as a Background Artist, Matte Painter, Concept Artist, and Art Director on over 25 projects ranging from feature animation (The Prince of Egypt, Antz, Shrek, The Polar Express, Tale of Despereaux), to video games (Diablo, Starcraft, World of Warcraft, Tiger Woods PGA Tour), to visual effects for motion pictures (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Big Miracle, Land of the Lost, The Spirit, Speed Racer, I am Legend, Evan Almighty, Leatherheads, Superman Returns, X-men 3, Chronicles of Narnia, Fever Pitch, Chronicles of Riddick). In a career spanning over 16 years, he has worked in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and London for prestigious studios like Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain, Rhythm & Hues, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Framestore, Electronic Arts, and Blizzard Entertainment. He started his career in 1995 for a fledgling, start-up studio named Dreamworks. Mr. Esmeralda began his formative art studies here at San Jose State University in the late 1980’s. While he would eventually complete his illustration studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he would eventually earn his BFA degree, Thomas decided to return to San Jose State University to pursue a Master’s degree. Mr. Esmeralda concurrently teaches courses in both advanced illustration and visual development.
