Majoring or Minoring in Physics and Astronomy

At the core of all science, physics helps us understand chemical reactions, protein folding, the Earth’s interior, and the life cycle of stars. Physicists invented the transistor, the laser, and the electron microscope. They play key roles in the design and operation of spacecraft and in the development of electronic and optical instrumentation. The Department of Physics and Astronomy faculty at SJSU are experts in fields including astronomy and cosmology, atomic/molecular/optical physics and quantum information, condensed matter, high-energy physics, optics and photonics, physics education research, and quantum foundations. The department receives on average approximately $1.8 million annually in external funding for sponsored research.

The SJSU Department of Physics and Astronomy undergraduate curriculum combines flexible degree pathways with uniquely individualized access to world-class scientists. Come join us.
