Associate Professor, Emeritus
PhD, UCLA, 1990
Dr. Cobie Archie Harris passed away peacefully at his home in Oakland, CA on September 27, 2019.
A professor for many years in the department, Professor Harris will be remembered as an engaging teacher who inspired students to challenge their perceptions and participate directly in political action. His lectures concerning the famous victory stand salute by two SJSU alums and Olympic medalists at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 – an image that came to symbolize the African-American struggle – was one such example. Surprised to learn about the politics surrounding the salute, students in Professor Harris’ class led the effort to honor the memory of Tommy Smith and John Carlos. The statue commemorating their achievement and that famous victory salute was unveiled outside of Clark Hall in 2005.
