Reducing the Equity Gap

SJSU has postponed its 3rd Annual Student Success Symposium until further notice.

We are targeting an audience from community colleges, CSUs, and other interested higher education institutions--we hope that students, faculty and staff attend.

This event is co-sponsored by the Project Succeed (DOE: P031A140081) and the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at SJSU. This year’s symposium will focus on an issue of great importance to the CSU - reducing equity gaps among our historically underserved students. There were over 250 attendees at this one-day conference. Dr. Backer was the lead in the development and implementation of this event which included two keynote speakers (Dr. Laura Rendón and Dr. Scott Freeman) and 7 presentation sessions, 3 panel sessions, 6 workshop sessions, 4 discussion circles, and 6 poster sessions with a total of 113 speakers.

There were over 300 attendees at this one-day conference. SJSU hosted the inaugural Student Success Symposium on March 15th, 2018 from 8am to 2pm in the Diaz Compean Student Union Ballroom. The event included five keynote speakers (Dr. James T. Minor, Timothy Renick, George D. Kuh, Jeff Gold, and Sylvia Hurtado).

Summer 2018

 First Year Experience (FYE) Workshops - June 5th, 2018 9am-1pm; 
                                                                                     June 7th, 2018 9am-1pm

FYE in Area E: The first workshop, “FYE in Area E” will be held on June 5th, 2018, 9 am – 1 pm. We are inviting Area E coordinators, faculty who currently teach Area E courses, and faculty who are considering creating an Area E course. Please RSVP by June 1st using the link above. FYE in your Major: The second workshop, “FYE in your Major” will be held on June 7th, 2018, 9 am – 1 pm. We are broadcasting an open invitation to anyone, faculty, program directors, and chairs, who are interested and thinking about creating an FYE in their major. Peer Connections Workshops - August 2nd and 3rd, 2018;

August 2nd & 3rd - CSU Northern California Supplemental Instruction Regional Training
This is a professional development opportunity offered through the Chancellor's Office encouraging campuses around Northern California to come to an official training facilitated by a trainer out of University Missouri - Kansas City. The material being shared will cover the what's, why's, and how's of supplemental instruction. There will be limited spots for SJSU. If you are interested in attending, please contact Deanna Peck -

August 7, 2018 - Incorporating Peer Educators Into Your Class 9 am - 1 pm in SSC 600
This will be an interactive workshop where you can learn more about the variety of peer educators and the support you will receive through Peer Connections. You will also hear best practices of partnering with a peer educator and discover what will be expected of you. The second half of your time together, you will be working with your syllabus and talking to other faculty with similar peer educators to see how your class can best incorporate a peer educator. All faculty who have a peer educator assigned for Fall 2018 are highly encouraged to attend. Other faculty thinking about having peer educators in the future are welcomed. We would like to invite all interested, new and enrolled faculty/staff mentors to join us for our summer workshop. Block Scheduling Workshop (Celebration) - August 31st, 2018 11am-1pm

We would like to invite the faculty/staff who participated in Block Scheduling to a lunch event. This will be a two hour event, and is scheduled for Thursday May 31st, 2018 from 12:00 pm (noon) to 2:00 pm. We would like this event to not only thank the faculty and staff that made Block Scheduling function but also would like to take the opportunity to gather feedback from their experiences undergoing Block Scheduling. The Project Succeed FYE Steering Committee is being developed to help create a new and improved FYE program at SJSU. The goals of the committee are to re-write the FYE policy at SJSU and to develop the standards for FYE programs at SJSU. The FYE 3 Unit Course Creation Task force is being charged with creating the guidelines, format and assessment of a 3 Unit Course that would be used as a FYE.
