Jeffery Lee

Dean's Scholar

Major: Applied Mathematics/Statistics
College of Science

Why did you choose your major?

I chose to study statistics because math is a fun and challenging subject and because I intend to become an actuary or a statistician.

What does receiving this particular award mean to you?

For me, receiving the Dean's Scholar award means that the time and effort that I put forth in my studies have been paying off - it's great to be recognized in this way.

Who has had the greatest influence of impact on your life? In addition, tell us about a SJSU faculty member who contributed to your academic success.

My family and friends make me want to try hard. In terms of an SJSU faculty member who contributed to my academic success, Dr. Martina Bremer from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics comes to mind first. In addition to being my professor on multiple occasions, she has been my mentor for 3 years. But in all seriousness (really), every single professor at SJSU that I have taken classes from (and even some who I have never taken a class from) has contributed to my academic success in his or her own non-trivial way.

Describe an experience that has shaped who you are today.

I would say that immigrating from Taiwan to the United States in second grade of primary school has definitely shaped who I am today.

What would you say to other students to encourage or inspire them to attain academic excellence?

If you have anything you aren't sure about, then you should convince yourself to ask questions. Even if you don't know what to ask, say something to let someone know that they can help you.

What makes you a Spartan?

I am a Spartan because I am proud to be one.

Additional note: Math is cool.
