Director of Innovation, Office of Innovation
Michael Muthig joined San José State University in September 2020 as the first director
of the Office of Innovation. Prior to joining SJSU, he spent three years at the University
of Adelaide (South Australia) as a Senior Commercialization Manager gaining international
experience in technology transfer and commercialization.
Over the past 30 years, Dr. Muthig served in a variety of leadership and senior professional positions. His experience includes technology commercialization, new company creation, corporate management, business development, market research, project management, and staff supervision. During that time, he worked with government labs, universities, private companies, and individual inventors to identify business applications for emerging technologies in a variety of fields, including engineering, computer science, energy, physics, chemistry, agriculture, medicine, biomedical engineering, and biochemistry.
Dr. Muthig holds bachelor and doctorate degrees in Geology from the University of South Carolina, and a master’s degree in Geology from the University of Kentucky.
As Director of Innovation, Dr. Muthig leads the definition and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan to support innovation, industry research partnerships, technology transfer, commercialization and economic development. He promotes and supports the generation and protection of intellectual property developed by SJSU faculty, staff, and students. He also nurtures an inclusive entrepreneurial culture across SJSU, and supports the formation and growth of SJSU affiliated startup companies.
