RSCA in Five: Faculty Short Talks on

Big Data and Data Science

Dear SJSU Faculty,

I am delighted to invite you to join us to attend or present for the first of four 2022/23 RSCA in Five: Faculty Short Talks. We begin the semester series with talks on Big Data and Data Science.

What: RSCA in Five: Faculty Short Talks on Big Data and Data Science
When: Friday, October 14, 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Format: Hybrid event in the Student Union — light lunch and snacks
Specific room and Zoom information to follow at a later date.

We live in the world of large and complex sets of data. The multidisciplinary field of data science explores new modes of data-driven discovery in many fields including health, the social sciences, science, and engineering. We welcome talks on data science, its intersectionality with artificial intelligence and machine learning, cybersecurity and national security, the ethics of data generation and data mining and/or privacy, as well as using data analytics and data visualization to solve real-world problems. I encourage faculty from across the SJSU campus to present and showcase their research on this topic impacting all of our lives.

Faculty who would like to present are asked to respond no later than Friday, September 23 to receive specific presentation details. As this is a hybrid event, presenters will have the option of sharing their presentations in person or via Zoom.

The RSCA in Five format allows faculty to present their talk, and then receive feedback from the audience. All presenters will have five minutes to share a talk, video, live reading, or performance, followed by a brief Q&A. Time permitting, the event concludes with a general group discussion that includes the audience, the presenters, and representatives from the Office of Research. The goals are to build awareness of the breadth and excellence of SJSU faculty RSCA within our community and foster dialogue and collaboration.

I very much look forward to seeing you on Friday, October 14, at 10:30 a.m.

Kind Regards,
Richard Mocarski

Associate Vice President for Research
