Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (RSCA) Grant Initiative

The new Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity (RSCA) Grant Initiative is replacing the former Undergraduate Research Grant (URG) program. The new initiative is for both undergraduate and graduate students and is designed to support students engaged in RSCA with a faculty mentor by providing funding for student assistantships and supplies for the student’s work or virtual conference attendance for the student.  

Who is eligible?

Eligible students are those who are currently matriculated and will not be graduating prior to the end of the grant period: Spring Semester 2022 (May 2022). Students must also be collaborating with an SJSU faculty member with a currently funded grant (extramural or internal) supporting their RSCA project and with approved RSCA Adapt Plans or remote work.

Student awardees and their faculty mentors commit to working together on advancing their RSCA objectives and to participating in monthly meetings with other awardees and providing “Student RSCA in Five Minute” presentations at least once per funding period. Students will also be expected to present their research findings at the 2022 Celebration of Research.

How much funding is available?

Awards of up to $3,500 will be granted per application.  Grant funds can be used to (1) purchase project related software, equipment, materials, and supplies, (2) pay for student assistantships, and (3) pay virtual conference registration fees for the student. Funds may not be used for faculty travel or compensation.

Selection Criteria

The evaluation criteria are as follows:

  • The overall quality of the application;
  • The significance of the project and merit of the work;
  • The likelihood that the student’s participation will contribute to their educational and career goals;
  • The appropriateness of the methodology or the creative focus;
  • The potential for accomplishing the proposed project; and
  • The strength of the proposed mentoring relationship.

Process Timeline

February 15, 2021: Applications due

Mid-to-late March, 2021: Notifications go out to applicants. Successful grant recipients receive directions on how to start their RSCA projects with their faculty mentors.

April 2021 - May 31, 2022: Students and faculty mentors participate in monthly meetings of all grant recipients during the academic year so students can present their progress and receive feedback.

April 29, 2021: Grant recipients will be invited to participate virtually in the 2021 Celebration of Research where their awards will be announced to the campus community.

Spring 2022: Grant recipients will be expected to present their research at the 2022 Celebration of Research (date will likely be in April, 2022).

May 31, 2022: Program ends.
