There Are 3 Main Steps to the Application Process to the Science Education Program; Click the Below Links to Go to the Specific Steps:

Step 1: Meet with the Science Education Program Director

Step 2: Submit your application through Graduate Admissions & Program Evaluations

Step 3: Submit your application to Teacher Education

Step 1: Attend an Applicant Orientation Session & Meet with Your Subject Area Advisor

RSVP to attend an Applicant Orientation session, which creates an opportunity for you to receive an overview of this program from our advisors, get your questions answered, and meet some of your potential future classmates. Contact Science Education Program Director: Resa Kelly at resa.kelly@sjsu.edu.

1. An evaluation for Subject Matter Competency (SMC)

  • You will meet with the director to review your unofficial transcripts to insure your GPA meets the requirement (2.75 or higher). In addition, CSET scores will be reviewed and recommendations will be made for the Year Long Placement program, the MA Science Education Program or Internship Program.
  • Please examine the CSET exams you need to pass to establish that you have the subject matter competence necessary to be successful in our program. Typically, all students must show that they have taken and passed the General Science CSET (#215) and one more CSET in a specialized area. Please review the CSET exams by subject area.

2. An Interview

  • The interview assesses your disposition towards the teaching profession and also screens for English oral language proficiency. If your English oral language proficiency is not at the mid-level advanced as defined by the ACTFL you may be called in for further screening.

3. A writing task

  • You will complete a timed writing task that addresses a specific, non-science content related, prompt. This writing sample is reviewed by teacher education as part of your application materials. If you need to retake the writing task, you will be notified by email. The writing section of the CBEST does not fulfill this requirement.
