How to Apply to Be a Learning Assistant

Faculty

Faculty interested in using Learning Assistants (LAs) must apply by creating a Faculty Course Proposal (FCP) for the particular course they are teaching. Here’s how to navigate the LAA site:

  1. Navigate to the LAA sign in page and create a new account. Your account will need to be verified, which may take a day or so.
  2. Once your account is verified, navigate to the LAA homepage. There are 5 options at the top of the page (Home, LA Campus, LA Reflections, LASSO, Resources) - select LA Campus;
  3. In the left hand menu bar, you should see SJSU as your institution, a drop down menu with Fall 2021 selected, course proposals, and course hiring - select Course Proposals;
  4. Then select, Start Course Proposal. Follow the prompts to be guided through the process. You will need to Create new proposal. (This application may take a bit of time and effort the first time you write your proposal, but you will be able to copy this proposal in future semesters).

Faculty returning to the Learning Assistant Alliance (LAA)

Over the summer, the FCP was redesigned to be more flexible in response to the numerous ways in which instructional modes have shifted since last Spring. Previous course proposals do not align well with the current state of instruction and the new ways in which LAs are being incorporated into course components. Thus faculty will not be able to simply duplicate a proposal from previous semesters the first time they create an FCP in this format.

However, here’s a shortcut so that you don’t have to rewrite your FCP from scratch:

  1. Navigate to the LAA sign in page and sign in.
  2. Navigate to the LAA homepage. There are 5 options at the top of the page (Home, LA Campus, LA Reflections, LASSO, Resources) - select LA Campus;
  3. In the left hand menu bar, you should see SJSU as your institution, a drop down menu with Fall 2021 selected, course proposals, and course hiring - Go to the drop down menu and select a semester you know you have already written a FCP for;
  4. In the same left hand menu - select Course Proposals;
  5. In the same left hand menu - select your department;
  6. In the same left hand menu - select your course, you should then see your entire FCP;
  7. Now, open another window in your web browser and navigate to LAA Campus;
  8. In the left hand menu bar, make sure the drop down menu is on Fall 2021;
  9. In the same left hand menu bar - select Course Proposals;
  10. In the same left hand menu bar - select Start new proposal;
  11. Follow the prompts to be guided through the process. You will need to Create new proposal;
  12. Now, navigate back and forth between your two browser windows, copying and pasting the relevant info. Note, there are some new aspects to the FCP since it's been adapted to online learning, so you may not be able to copy and paste everything.
