The Department of Mathematics at San José State University offers two bachelor's degrees as well as a master's degree for students interested in statistics and related fields.
The BS Applied Math, Concentration in Economics and Actuarial Science is designed for students who want to become actuaries and for students who want a program that integrates business, economics, and mathematics. The BS Applied Math, Concentration in Statistics is a more general degree which, with appropriate choices of electives and required support courses, will well position the student for a variety of careers or prepare students for graduate studies in statistics.
The MS Statistics has been approved by the Council of Graduate Schools as one of only four Professional Science Master's programs in statistics nationwide (and the only one west of the Mississippi). This program is designed for students who wish to become practicing statisticians in business, government or industry. Students with a bachelor's degree in engineering, the sciences, economics, business, the social sciences or any other field which uses statistics are encouraged to apply for this program in order to learn advanced statistical techniques to apply in their fields. Students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or statistics are welcome to apply for the program in order to advance their technical skills and learn applications in areas of interest. Although the program is intended for students planning to enter industry after graduation, some students have pursued a PhD in statistics after successfully completing this program.
