Study Abroad and Away

The College of Professional and Global Education is committed to internationalizing San Jose State University in order to cultivate an environment of diversity and inclusion, helping you to prepare to live and lead in a globalized world. In support of this mission, Study Abroad and Away has a wide variety of options to help you join the Global Spartan community.

With long-term programs lasting a semester or an entire year, your options are limitless. Our expansive network of partner institutions and programs will give you the opportunity to diversify your education and have the experience you have always dreamed of.

If you prefer a more condensed, focused international experience, then our short-term programs are right up your alley! Faculty-Led Programs offer you the chance to visit a global destination and study onsite with SJSU faculty and a cohort of your peers. Or perhaps you would like to take classes on an international campus at a prestigious international institution for an abbreviated Summer School Abroad experience, taking classes with students from across the globe.

Go for a longer or shorter period, the choice is yours and the possibilities are limitless! Start by finding the program that is right for you by searching our database by region, program type or major, or book an appointment with one of our advisors to discuss your options. And check out our Events calendar for details on upcoming events and information sessions. Our goal is to help you make your dreams a reality. Welcome to the Global Spartan community!

DACA Students

In the College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE), we understand the importance of studying abroad. Due to current immigration policies, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students may substitute international experiences outside the country with domestic immersion experiences within the United States.

The Study Abroad and Away (SAA) office currently offers domestic Alternative Break Programs (non-credit) and Faculty-Led Programs (credit) during the spring and summer breaks. Please check the SAA website throughout the year for details and updates about these offerings. CPGE staff will continue working with the Colleges and departments to identify additional study away experiences within the U.S.

On campus, there are many opportunities to engage in intercultural experiences including participation in the Global Student Network (GSN) student organization, living at the International House, pursuing recognition of your international involvement through the Global Leadership Advancement Center (GLAC), attending weekly Coffee Hours, participating in language and culture exchanges through the LACE program, and volunteering in the community locally. To learn more about domestic cross-cultural trips, please e-mail SAA.

Study Abroad and Away Covid-19 Update

The CDC issued guidance on March 1, 2020 and advised the postponement or cancellation of all upcoming student foreign exchange programs. The CDC notes, and we believe, that “students may face unpredictable circumstances, travel restrictions, challenges in returning home or accessing health care while abroad.”

Due to the dynamic nature of the Coronavirus and its impact on travel, the Study Abroad and Away office has taken the following actions in regards to our programs:

  • Exchange programs in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, and Spring 2021 Alternative Break programs have been cancelled.
  • The travel portion of all Winter 2021 and Summer 2021 Faculty-Led Programs, and Summer 2021 Summer School Abroad programs have been cancelled; the majority of Faculty-Led Programs have transitioned to a virtual format.

All students impacted by cancellations or program transitions have been notified. The Study Abroad and Away office will continue to monitor this evolving situation and will make decisions about future programs and travel as needed.

We encourage you to explore program options for Winter 2022 and Spring 2022 on the Spartans Abroad Portal. Applications are now open for Winter 2022 Faculty-Led Programs.

Please reach out to us at SpartansAbroad@sjsu.edu for questions or if you need assistance.  If an emergency, contact the University Police Department at 408-924-2222.
