Vietnam: Everyday Occupations from Hanoi to Dalat

Vietnam is a country rich in history and culture. Through readings, seminars, in-class dialogue, site visits, service learning opportunities, cultural excursions and self-reflection, students will explore occupational engagement and the context in which occupations take place. Students will travel to 3 distinctively different areas of Vietnam, Hanoi, Hoi An and Dalat, to gain an appreciation and understanding of how environment, culture and context influence individuals in their day to day life.
Additionally, emerging roles for occupational therapy and other health promoting services in an international setting will be explored.
The overall goal for the international experience program in occupational therapy is to provide opportunity for students to gain cross-cultural and cross-national insight into the political, social, cultural and economic factors that influence the way that individuals in this culture engage in occupations; to define the role of health care services, including, but not limited to occupational therapy, within the system of care; and to identify ways in which culture affects occupational performance. Social justice issues are explored, and the role of the student as a global citizen is emphasized.
OCTH 210ITL Seminar in Occupational Therapy: International Experience (3 units)
Gain cross-cultural and national insight into political, social, cultural, economic factors that influence occupational therapy services outside of the U.S. Define the role of occupational therapy and therapists as global citizens, engage local people in its services, and explore social and occupational justice issues.
Program Leader: Jerilyn (Gigi) Smith
Associate Professor Smith, PhD, OTR/L, SWC, has special advanced education and training in the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders which is one among many areas of expertise that she brings to the Occupational Therapy program. She graduated with her B.S. in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University. She also adds to her distinction as being among the first graduating cohort of the Distance Master's program at SJSU. Dr. Smith completed her PhD in Health Sciences at Touro University International. Her research was in the area of autism, sensory processing and feeding and eating behaviors. Dr. Smith has authored several chapters in national and internationally recognized occupational therapy textbooks. She has presented locally, nationally, and internationally on dysphagia and the role of occupational therapy in treating swallowing disorders. Dr. Smith is the Co-Chair of the Student Leadership Committee for the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC), and is a member of the Commission on Practice for the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). She also serves the department as the Graduate Admissions Coordinator and is the Student OT Association (SOTA) Advisor.
Program Leader: Alison George
Alison George, MS, OTR/L has been a lecturer at San Jose State University (SJSU) for over 20 years. She has clinical expertise in providing occupational therapy services to adults with physical physical disabilities as well as early intervention services to children with special needs. She has taught a variety of courses while at SJSU but the focus of her teaching has been in functional kinesiology, occupational therapy practice and the occupational therapy physical disabilities clinic. In addition, Lecturer George is a contributing author to three chapters in the internationally recognized textbook, Pedretti's Occupational Therapy: Practice Skills for Physical Dysfunction (8th ed). She currently serves as the Co-Chair for the Student Leadership Committee for the Occupational Therapy Association of California.
