Admitted Fall 2018 and After
SJSU EXPECTATIONS FOR COMPLETION
IN WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AND QUANTITATIVE REASONING COURSES
FALL 2018 AND LATER
San Jose State University expects all students entering as first-year frosh to complete their written communication (area A2) and quantitative reasoning (area B4) general education requirements through courses appropriate to their majors by the end of their second academic year, including the following summer. To this end, all frosh admitted in the fall who have not completed their A2 and B4 requirements through Advanced Placement exams, International Baccalaureate exams, or transfer coursework must enroll in the appropriate A2 and B4 courses during their first year. Students with an enrollment category M-IV or W-IV (Ready with Support and Early Start Required) must enroll in the appropriate A2 and B4 courses in their first semester.
Students admitted in the spring semester who choose a stretch sequence, either Stretch
English or Statway, both of which start only in the fall semester, may extend their
A2 and B4 enrollment date to their first fall semester.
Any student admitted Fall 2018 or later who does not complete both GE areas A2 and
B4 with a grade of C- or better by the end of the first academic year (including the
following summer) will be placed on administrative academic probation and remain continously
enrolled until both requirements are complete. Students who do not complete both general
education areas A2 and B4 with a grade of C- or better by the end of the second academic
year (including the following summer) will be subject to Administrative Academic Disqualification
and withdrawn from the university. (For frosh admitted in the spring semester, the
requirement is extended by one semester to the end of the second full academic year
of attendance.)
All Former Students Returning and upper-division special admit transfers who have
not completed GE areas A2 and B4 will be required to enroll in appropriate coursework
in their first semester of attendance. And will be placed on Administrative Academic
Probation if that coursework is not passed with a grade of C- or better by the end
of their first term of enrollment. Students in these categories will have one full
academic year to complete GE areas A2 and B4 with a C- or better or be subject to
withdrawal from SJSU through Administrative Academic Disqualification.
