Upcoming Retirement Seminars

Learn about your retirement benefits directly from the providers. CalPERS will be on campus Tuesday, March 1 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am in Clark 547 presenting Planning Your Retirement. This workshop provides an overview of the PERS retirement program and options. Participants have the opportunity to ask specific questions of a PERS representative. It will cover information regarding the retirement process, planning for retirement, selecting the best date to retire, calculating retirement allowance, CalPERS health benefits, and post-retirement considerations.

Kaiser Permanente will be on campus on Monday, February 29 presenting Medicare 101 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm in Clark 547. Get all of your questions about Medicare answered. You will learn about the different parts of Medicare (parts A, B, C and D), the eligibility requirements, how your CalPERS retiree health coverage integrates with Medicare, and the differences between your current health coverage and retiree CalPERS health coverage.

Register for CalPERS Planning Your Retirement by calling CalPERS at (888) 225-7377 or by visiting the CalPERS website. Register for Medicare 101 in PeopleSoft with course code TRCR54. Contact Julie Inouye Wong for more information.

Free Biometrics Screenings

Anthem Blue Cross will be on campus Wednesday, April 6, in Clark 547 to conduct free biometrics screenings for SJSU employees. Knowing your health numbers can help you take charge of your health and well-being. It only takes 15-20 minutes to get these non-fasting screenings: cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, and BMI. At the end of the 15-20 minute appointment, your results will be available.

All participants will be entered in a drawing to win VISA gift cards courtesy of Anthem Blue Cross. You don’t need to be an Anthem Blue Cross member to participate and win!

Stay tuned for information on how to register. Join the Well U Google Group to receive email updates about all upcoming Well U events and programs.

Spartans Stepping Beyond

“Melanie did a fabulous job overseeing the Provost’s Staff Appreciation Breakfast.  What a feat! She did an amazing job working through all of the details. The food was great. The program was great. The gift baskets and raffle prizes were spectacular. I couldn’t believe that when I arrived early before the event, everything was totally under control…all of the planning and attention that was paid to the details really showed. Thanks for a super job!”

CSU Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA) Program Changes Effective April 1, 2016

The California State University is making important changes to the Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA) Program which will be effective April 1, 2016. The most significant change is the consolidation from five vendors (i.e. TIAA-CREF, VALIC, MetLife, ING/VOYA, and Fidelity) to one sole vendor, Fidelity Investments. Buzz on...Ligaya Barber

Ligaya joined the San José State University community in 2000. She was hired as a Payroll Technician and has assisted her customers for almost 16 years! Prior to joining SJSU, Ligaya worked at the SAP Center (formerly HP Pavilion). Even though Ligaya has been with SJSU for an extended period of time, some of you may not know her very well -- we can help with that; read on!

Q. Where did you grow up?

A. I grew up in Palo Leyte, Philippines, where I attended elementary and high school. When it was time for college, I moved to the next town over, Tacloban City, and attended Divine Word University, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in Accounting.

Q. What do you like to eat?

A. I have an appetite for Chinese food, Mexican food, Vietnamese food and Indian food. If I’m not munching on these goodies, you will probably see me with a slice of pizza and a caesar salad at Pizza-My-Heart!

Q. What is your favorite spot on campus?

A. My favorite spot is the Tower Lawn. During lunch time, I enjoy taking a stroll and sitting by the fountain, either reading a book or studying the beautiful greeneries at the lawn. I especially love the vines and roses that surround the area.

Q. What is the most satisfying part of your job?

A. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds. I’m interested in learning about their culture, home countries, personal values and upbringings. I value the relationships I’ve built with my customers, some of whom have become my friends.

Q. How do you spend your time outside of work?

A. Outside of work, I’m a homebody. I enjoy cooking and spending time catching up on Facebook posts (You all know how overwhelming those posts can get!). When time permits, I would love to travel to Paris, Italy and Germany.

Q. Who is someone that inspires you?

A. The person that inspires me the most is my dad. He’s a strong man who stands independently to face all odds. My dad inspires me to be the best that I can be and to always give my best in all I do.
