August 2016

Welcome to Fall 2016!

We are excited to welcome our students back to campus and extend a warm welcome back to those who took the summer off. Fall in Human Resources is exhilarating. As we recruit and hire new employees; reappoint faculty, and ensure we are available to assist our current employees.

With so much information coming your way this time of year and in the spirit of helping and caring, we'd like to remind you of a few HR items that may impact you and/or your staff.

Student Employees: If your department employs, or is planning to hire a student assistant, keep in mind that in order for a student to be cleared to begin work, he or she must have a current Employment Verification Card (EVC). If the expiration date on their card is 08.21.2016 or prior, you must send them to Human Resources to obtain a new card. You can reference the Student Employment Guide for Hiring Departments for more information on hiring student employees.

Change of Address: If you moved during the summer, don’t forget to change your address! You can do this either through self-service PeopleSoft (MySJSU) or by completing an Employee Action Request form and turning it into Human Resources.

Verification of Employment: There are several options available for verification of employment. You can complete and email the Request for Verification of Employment to or call the verification of employment phone line, 408-924-2150.

HR Team Members Win Systemwide Awards

Several members of the Human Resources team, as well as two members of the ITS staff, were honored during the systemwide Human Resources Growing Together Conference held in Long Beach in June. The conference was a great opportunity for HR professionals from across the CSU system to connect and interact with staff from the Chancellor’s Office.

Carolina Buchting, Manager of Employee Services, was honored with an individual award for her focus on process improvement and customer service. She works tirelessly to ensure HR operations are running in the most efficient and effective way, and has built partnerships across campus to ensure customer needs and concerns are heard and addressed. She has keen analytical skills and is always looking for ways to automate processes and eliminate paper and unnecessary operational redundancies. She is a critical member of the HR management team, and is collaborative, focused and determined. Carolina is truly an All-Star in everything she does.

A collaborative team including members of HR and Information Technology Services was honored with a team award for Using iSupport to Finalize Staff and MPP Recruitments. Those in attendance accepted the award on the group’s behalf. This project was designed to increase communication and add efficiency to the hiring process for staff and MPP recruitments. This process requires documentation and information to be sent back and forth between the hiring manager and Workforce Planning, and there was a need to have one repository for these documents, as well as one central place to exchange information.

Using iSupport to house and track this information was suggested by staff in ITS and it has provided a more efficient process and the ability to easily track the life cycle of a recruitment, which was previously a manual process. Through the efforts of the team below, this functionality was designed, developed and implemented, and it continues to evolve to improve the overall recruitment process.

  • Human Resources: Carrie Medders, Carolina Buchting; Workforce Planning: Rosalina Calderon, Tony Garcia, Amanda Frank; Employee Services: Stacy Perez, Sharon Austin, Courtney Bogan, Jasmine Ferrer
  • Information Technology Services: Leon Nguyen, Ryan Campbell

Spartans Stepping Beyond

“Do not worry… Julie is here! For the past year, while I was new in Operations & Imaging, this was the motto that Julie Dang [pictured above] repeatedly used to reassure me that she was there to assist me in any way she could with my new job function.

I am so very grateful and thankful to her for her calmness, patience, support, and for her willingness to openly share whatever information, knowledge, and tips she has to help me with my work. She not only understands the work but always keeps students first in anything she does. As an SJSU graduate she definitely has a deeply rooted commitment to the SJSU mission.”

Buzz on...Diane Quintos

Diane comes from a large but tight-knit family; she is 1 of 23 grandchildren. What most people would consider to be an extended family is another parent or sibling for Diane. She describes these individuals to be the people who taught her morals and values.

Diane is from Southern California, but after applying to numerous UC’s, she found her home here at San Jose State University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. Even though Diane studied Kinesiology, her true passion is Human Resources. Diane describes working in HR as similar to being on an athletic field because she’s always running around the office doing a variety of different things.

Q. Where did you grow up?
A. I grew up Oceanside, San Diego.

Q. What do you like to eat?
A. Sushi! I can never get sick of sushi. Fuji Sushi in Downtown San Jose is probably my favorite. One time I went to a sushi restaurant that offered Chef’s choice sushi and had 22 pieces! I could’ve eaten more...seriously.
Q. What is the most satisfying part of your job?
A. The most satisfying part of my job is being able to achieve the right results and to have full reign over the creation of something (e.g. project, document, manual, etc) that helps more people than expected.
Q. How do you spend your time outside of work?
A. I spend a lot of time hanging out with my pug, Milo, and my friends. I also like to travel, so I plan many trips to different countries, states, and towns on my weekends. One of the things I really look forward to in a town is a brewery due to my love of artisan beers.
Q. Who is someone that inspires you?
A. Although there is not one person that has all the traits that inspire me, I do find little bit of inspiration from a variety of people each day and strive to achieve those same qualities.
