New Faces of Human Resources

You may have noticed a few new faces in the HR department. In 2016 our department welcomed three new members: Maria Rocha, Tamela Sullivan and Francis Sweetman. For those who have not had the chance to get to know them, we want to give you a glimpse of where they came from, what they currently do for SJSU and an interesting fact that may surprise you.
Maria Rocha
Maria previously worked for the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in San Jose in the Accounting department. She served as the Accounts Payable Clerk for over 10 years and handled over 700 accounts single handedly. She joined the HR team as a Payroll Technician and now manages 20 departments, making sure all faculty, staff and students get paid on time. Outside of work she enjoys going to Zumba and volunteering at her kids’ schools, where she has chaperoned many school events including driving them hundreds of miles away!
Tamela Sullivan
Tamela joined our OnBoarding team from Technology/Key Point Credit Union where she worked six years in Collections and nine years in HR, focusing on Training and Development. At SJSU, she is an OnBoarding Coordinator, where she assists potential candidates, executes offer letters, maintains position management, processes volunteer appointments and conducts new employee orientations. In addition to her day job, Tamela is also in the process of starting her own business called In Powerment University, where she will aim to assist young women and girls define the beauty within themselves. She also served as the Gala Chair Lead for the Greene Scholar Program. This program is designed to enhance the awareness of STEM in African American children.
Francis Sweetman
Francis came to SJSU from Cabrillo College in Aptos where he dedicated six years as a Technology Specialist in the Enrollment Services Department. He worked with students and staff. His responsibilities included scheduling, building and creating the on-line registration process for over 16,000 students, and web maintenance. Francis joined HR as the Web and Documentation Analyst and spends the majority of his day developing and maintaining the HR website. A big component to the HR website is making sure documents posted on are accessible for individuals with disabilities per Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Francis, interestingly, for two years co-hosted a late night radio show called the "Zombie Jamboree", a NPR public radio station for alternative music with hearty discussions.
