Spotlight On The Cabinet:

Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, Charlie Faas

Meet Charlie Faas, our Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Charlie joined the university in June of 2016 but has been active in the City of San Jose for many years.

Q. Where are you from?

A. I'm originally from New York, but moved to San Jose in the early 90's. I spent the first 20 years of my career in high tech (IBM, Cadence), getting involved in two San Jose non-profits in my spare time. The After School All Stars - founded in 1996, provides free programming to at-risk Bay Area youth, and the San Jose Sports Authority - I joined in 1994 and am now the Chair. Events include Olympic Gymnastics trials 2012/16, SJ Sports Hall of Fame, and the Reach program for youth that use sports to overcome adversity. 

Q. What are your hobbies?

A. I collect wine (mostly California) and enjoy finding new, small wineries. I love to cook for company or holiday meals and pair my wines. I also enjoy playing bocce ball.

Q. What impresses you most about the SJSU community?

A. I am truly impressed with the pride the faculty and staff have for the university. People really understand that we are here for the students. Everyone has a voice and contributes.  

Q. What one thing do you wish everyone knew about SJSU?

A. Internally, we all know the high quality of the education here and the links into the Valley. I wish that it was a two-way street. We need graduates, employers and the City of San Jose residents to more fully embrace the campus and our students.

Q. What is your high-level vision for SJSU in the coming year?

A. I intend to relentlessly pursue making sure the Bay Area recognizes the quality and commitment of our university to producing graduates to improve this area and reach further. We need to break some historical assumptions and establish trust/confidence in each of our internal organizations.

Q. Please complete the following sentence with one or two things about yourself that will help us get to know you better: The campus community would be surprised to know…

A. ...I am the first in my family to attend college. My parents ran the local Dairy Queen in upstate New York. My daughter’s ice hockey team won the National Championship in 2012. I met my wife, Joanne, here on the SJSU campus. Both my son and I are Eagle Scouts.

Did you know?

SJSU, along with all other CSU campuses, is in the middle of two major technology projects that may impact the way you work over the next few years.

Later this year, the PeopleSoft Human Resources/Campus Solutions database (currently known as HCM) will be split into two separate databases. For more information and timelines see CS 9.2 Upgrade Project.

Over the next few years, all PeopleSoft HR databases across the CSU will be consolidated into one database, much like the PeopleSoft Finance databases. The Common Human Resources System (CHRS) project is in progress but no timelines for SJSU's move have been set. See CHRS Project for more information or email with questions, comments or concerns. 

"Special delivery arrangements had to be made for a shipment of artificial turf that was going to Athletics. At 15 feet long, the 7 rolls were too long to be delivered to Distribution Services.

"Phil tapped into his knowledge from a previous job to help determine the best way to off-load the rolls of turf. However, the equipment we had didn't work out, and Phil helped devise a new plan by using the equipment we had in a different way. It took more than an hour to get the rolls unloaded, but it was accomplished through maximum Spartan effort!"

Changes to Spartans Stepping Beyond

Human Resources (HR) has been closely monitoring and reviewing the Spartans Stepping Beyond recognition program. Based on this review, as well as employee feedback, we have made a few changes and improvements. The updated process is outlined below:

  1. A campus community member (whether staff, faculty or student) nominates a fellow Spartan that has stepped beyond by using our online nomination form: Recognize a Fellow Spartan.
  2. HR receives the information and distributes electronic certificates for all individuals who were nominated. 
  3. HR puts all nominees and those who nominated them into a pool for a quarterly drawing.
  4. Each quarter HR randomly selects several individuals from the pool to receive Gold Points cards.
  5. HR hand delivers these Gold Points cards and takes a photo or selfie with the winners. Check out our current #Selfie Gallery!

We encourage you to participate in this quick and easy-to-use recognition program to nominate Spartans who consistently step above and beyond. This is a great way to tell another Spartan, “Thank you!” or “Job well done!”

San José State and The California State University provide several ways to learn online and we encourage you to take a look to see what is available.

​​Skillport 8.0

Skillport 8.0 offers more than the compliance training all employees are required to complete. As a CSU employee you have access to thousands of engaging online courses, books, and videos. Login with your SJSUOne ID and password to explore different libraries of information: 

  • Business: Develop soft skills in areas such as business writing, customer service and effective listening.
  • The Desktop: Provides learners with comprehensive courses related to Microsoft office for the PC and Mac, email etc.
  • IT: Courses and IT certification prep exams.

In addition, you have access to over 20,000 titles of books, audio books, and videos all at your fingertips. Check out Skillport 8.0 today! is an online learning service that hosts a growing library of more than 5,000 courses that includes over 100,000 videos taught by industry experts. Access is free to all SJSU employees with your San Jose public library card.

If you don’t have a library card, go to the King Library or your neighborhood San Jose Public Library branch to obtain or replace your card. Once you have your library card, follow these steps to gain access:

  • Access and enter your library card number and library password.
  • Once you have completed a course you can email your certificate of completion to yourself, your manager and HR for your personal file, if applicable.


LifeMatters, CSU's Employee Assistance Program, offers a variety of information and training available for health, family life, emotional well being etc.
