Faculty Additional Employment

University Personnel–Faculty Affairs is here to assist our campus constituents with "additional employment" to their primary appointment while ensuring compliance with the CSU Additional Employment Policy [pdf].

CSU Technical Letter HR 2002-05 [pdf] defines additional employment as “any CSU employment that is in addition to the employee’s primary appointment. Additional employment limitations are based on time-base, not salary. A maximum of 125% time-base is allowed under certain circumstances. Any employment compensated through CSU payroll, regardless of funding source (e.g., general fund, extension, lottery, CSU employment reimbursed by an auxiliary or other source). When determining additional employment under the CSU Additional Employment Policy, all CSU employment and all outside CSU foundation and other CSU auxiliary employment are considered together.”

Depending on the duties, "additional employment" duties may be appointed in one of the following areas:

  • Tower Foundation Appointments
  • Research Foundation Appointments
  • Substitute Faculty Payments
  • Summer Faculty Payments
  • College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE) Appointments
  • Special Consultant Appointments
  • Faculty Miscellaneous Payments
  • Category 2403 Appointments

Faculty do not accrue addtional benefits via "additional employment" such as sick leave, vacation, health and dental benefits, or accumulate seniority points.
