About WASC

What is WASC Accreditation?

SJSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accredits public and private colleges and universities in the western states and Hawaii. (Separate agencies accredit community colleges and high schools.). Only accredited institutions may administer federal financial aid to their students.

At SJSU, a Steering Committee representative of the entire SJSU community oversees our accreditation. It consists of faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members who contribute to, and review, our WASC Institutional report. Senate Resolution SS-S12-1 describes the Committee and how it is formed. Like all WASC schools, we also have an Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) who communicates with WASC. Members of the Steering Committee attend WASC trainings, workshops, WASC Academic Resource Conferences, and webinars. At these meetings, they learn about the WASC accreditation process, share the accomplishments of SJSU, and learn about the best practices from other institutions. Many of the materials from these workshops are available online.

The WASC accreditation process takes place over 18 months and requires only one on-site visit. The process is outlined in the WASC Handbook of Accreditation.

In July 2015 the WASC Commision reaffirmed SJSU’s accreditation for seven years as summarized in its findings in the   A Special Visit is scheduled for Spring 2017 to follow up on developments in the areas of leadership, organizational climate, shared governance, and campus climate.

Over the last several years, our campus community engaged in discussions, data gathering and self-reflection in preparation for an accreditation review by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). These efforts culminated in an institutional self-study report that was submitted to the commission in August 2014. WSCUC representatives reviewed that report, visited our campus in April 2015, and submitted a report to the Commission in May 2015. After consideration of the visiting team’s report, the Commission has reaffirmed SJSU’s accreditation for seven years as summarized in its findings in the July 2015 letter. A Special Visit was scheduled for Fall 2017, to follow up on developments in the areas of leadership, organizational climate, shared governance, and campus climate.
