Position obtained: Community Management Internship with Walgreens

" I prepared for the interview using the BIG Interview feature offered by the Career Center’s website. I recorded herself answering interview questions and received valuable advice from the Career Center staff on how to improve my verbal skills."

What made you interested in this career path?

I was accepted into San Jose State University as a Business Marketing major but had a huge interest in fashion design with my prior experience in high school.

I balanced school and work, working 40-hours per week at Wal-Mart throughout my freshman year in college to help pay for tuition.

How did you find your position?

I discovered Spartajobs through San Jose State University’s Early Opportunity Program (EOP) and attended a workshop hosted by the Career Center. I learned of career related events, and one in particular that caught my eye was the Walgreen's Information Session that offered a Community Management Internship. After attending the information session, I meet with the recruiter and managed to have an interview scheduled the following week! I prepared for the interview using the BIG Interview feature offered by the Career Center’s website. I recorded herself answering interview questions and received valuable advice from the Career Center staff on how to improve my verbal skills. On the day of my interview, I felt nervous but prepared and eventually landed the Walgreens Internship.

I knew it was important to look for full-time employment before I graduated so I attended another information session, but this time it was hosted by Bay Area’s Retail Leadership Center. Unexpectedly, I saw my former assistant manager from Wal-Mart and stayed persistent to keep in touch with him. After a few emails, he wanted to bring me in for an interview. I prepared extremely well by making my own list with practice answers to common interview questions and also went into the Career Center to practice with the career counselors. I landed a full-time job as the Assistant Manager for Wal-Mart and thanked my friends, family, and the Career Center for my successes.

What tips would you give your fellow Spartans?

I advise all college students to gain experiences to find one’s true interests. Although I originally wanted a career involved with fashion, my passions and desires changed throughout college.
