Bruce Olszewski (Ol-chef-ski) has enjoyed a diverse career in the environmental field. His experience includes work in energy efficiency, urban water conservation, materials conservation (recycling), urban planning, and higher education. He has work experience with private businesses, government, non-profit organizations, and academia. He is also the co-author of an environmental studies anthology, Readings in Environmental Studies, published by Kendall-Hunt.
A member of the Environmental Studies faculty at San José State University since 1989, Bruce has managed over $1.75 million in projects as the Director of the Center for Development of Recycling (CDR). Founded in 1989, CDR specializes in providing service-learning opportunities for students who work on community and environmental projects such as the Santa Clara County Recycling Hotline, City of San José Urban Water Conservation Program, and various recycling projects with consultants and local government. Dozens of students began their environmental careers with project and public service experience at CDR.
His community work includes five years of service to the City of Campbell as a Planning Commissioner and served as its Chairperson in 1989. Bruce has also consulted the City of San José in the development of its water conservation program and spearheaded a successful petition to the California Energy Commission to revise state plumbing standards to improve energy conservation. Bruce has also served as a Board Member with the Silicon Valley Industry Education Advisory Board, the Walden West Environmental Education Program, the South Bay Water Recycling Project, the Technical Advisory Committee to the Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission of Santa Clara County, and Sustainable Silicon Valley, a program of the California Environmental Protection Agency.
