Bio

Cathleen Miller is a professor in the MFA program, where she offers courses in creative nonfiction. For the past decade she has combined her love of teaching with a professional writing career. Cathy's memoir, The Birdhouse Chronicles, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. It describes her move from San Francisco to a ramshackle farmhouse in Pennsylvania's Amish country. In addition, she is the co-author of the international bestseller Desert Flower, translated into 55 languages, with over 11 million copies in print. Desert Flower was adapted for the screen in 2009 and has been released as a feature film in 27 countries; U.S. distribution is provided by National Geographic Movies. Cathy's essays have appeared in the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Salon.com, Cimarron Review, Old House Journal, and the anthologies Travelers' Tales San Francisco and Wild Writing Women: Stories of World Travel. Currently she's at work on a biography of Dr. Nafis Sadik, an advocate for women's reproductive freedom and the first female director of the United Nations. Cathy was one of the founding members of the popular Bay Area group, the Wild Writing Women; she won the Lowell Thomas Gold Award from the Society of American Travel Writers as editor-in-chief of their magazine. In 2004 she served as the Distinguished Writer in Residence at St. Mary's College.
