Dan Nathan-Roberts conducts research at the San Jose State University in cognitive ergonomics. Dan’ current research is on patient-centered healthcare and, design primarily for the home environment. Dr. Nathan-Roberts research interest lies at the intersection of Human Factors, design, sociotechnical work systems, and non-hospital health care.
Dr. Nathan-Roberts is a co-investigator on the $2.5M vizHOME grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to better understand the impact of the home on personal health information management. Previously, Dan completed an AHRQ Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison splitting time between the Center for Quality and Productivity with Dr. Pascale Carayon, and the Living Environments Laboratory with Dr. Patti Brennan.
He completed his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. Yili Liu. His dissertation focused on quantifying the aesthetic and physical ergonomic considerations involved in design of hand-held medical devices and mobile phones using Interactive Genetic Algorithms. While at the University of Michigan, Dr. Nathan-Roberts served twice as a CDC panelist on human factors, was a summer fellow in home healthcare at the FDA, worked for Intel on telemedicine system design, and wrote a book chapter on innovation with University of Michigan Ross School of Business professor Dr. Jeff DeGraff.
After completing a Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree at the University of Rochester, Dan was awarded a fellowship in cognitive science, and later worked as physical ergonomics research engineer at the University of California, Ergonomics Lab under Dr. David Rempel. Dr. Nathan-Roberts currently serves as a member of the Human Factors and Engineering Committee of AAMI (the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation).
