SJSU Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Diana Hollinger, performs a wide variety of literature including the masterworks for band and contemporary wind literature. The Symphonic Band encourages musical growth in all students through careful selection of appropriate repertoire. Membership in the Symphonic Band is open to all university students, regardless of major. Meeting twice a week, this group offers any student the opportunity to continue instrumental performance with a limited rehearsal schedule. No membership audition required, but auditions for chair placement and part assignments are made at the beginning of each semester.

How do I join a band at SJSU?
Visit the School of Music and Dance Office, Room M-179 and make an appointment to speak with one of the ensemble conductors. All students receive academic credit for all band courses.

Are scholarships available?
Yes, scholarships are awards are based upon performance level and the needs of the School. All music students enrolled in the Spartan Marching Band receive an automatic supplemental scholarship award.

Are instruments available?
Yes. For a $30 use fee each semester, a student may choose from a variety of school instruments required for ensemble performance.

Do I need to be a music major to play in band?
No, all bands are open to majors and non majors.

I want to become a music major, what should I do?
Speak with the Director of the School of Music and Dance in Music Room M-179. He will make all necessary audition arrangements.

When are band auditions?
Band auditions are held during two advising days prior to the first day of classes.

Band time requirements?
All bands meet as regularly scheduled classes and have additional time requirements. (Symphonic Band - 3 hours per week)

Do I need to pay for band trips?
There is no additional cost to the student for local and regional band travel and tours. International travel by University Bands does require additional funding from touring performers.
