Public Health

Students who complete the B.S. in Public Health at San Jose State University will be able to...

  1. Apply principles of social justice, through the lens of cultural humility, to achieve and sustain health equity. 

  2. Explain the intersectionality of environmental, social, economic, behavioral, biological and political factors influencing human health and identify opportunities for change.

  3. Interpret and apply ethical principles to the practice of public health.

  4. Demonstrate an ability to deliver public health messages in written, oral, and media-based formats to both public and professional audiences.

  5. Use public health methods and tools to collect and analyzepopulation health data.

  6. Interpret the basic concepts of human health and disease and research grounded in the history, philosophy, and practice of public health. 

  7. Analyze the effects of multiple levels of policy and health systems on population and individual health outcomes and employ strategies to participate in the policy practice.

  8. Use public health processes and practices, including working collaboratively with diverse individuals and communities, to createrelevant interventions or investigations that engage and build community capacity, promote health, and reduce health inequities and disparities.



Recreation

  1. Graduates will demonstrate summative knowledge and skills across the core curriculum integrating the standards of the Recreation profession within the context of a rapidly changing world.

  2. Graduates will plan, implement, and evaluate a recreation program or special events that are inclusive, culturally grounded and sensitive to diverse populations.

  3. Graduates will demonstrate budgeting and financial skills in the framework of sustainability and ethical stewardship.

  4. Graduates will demonstrate professional behavior and competencies in the framework of ethics, personal, and social responsibility.

  5. Graduates will demonstrate proficient and professional written communication keeping in mind the global communities they will be working in.

Master of Public Health

1.  Apply quantitative and qualitative forms of analysis to emerging trends, priorities, and assets in order to predict future individual, community, and population health needs and opportunities, taking into account public health’s historical foundations and current evidence base, and to communicate the implications for health promotion policy and practice.

2.  Apply concepts and theories of behavior, education, systems, complexity, communication, and ecological frameworks to design, plan, implement, evaluate, and disseminate health education and health promotion interventions and policy in accordance with public health objectives, community needs, and organizational and community goals

3.  Provide technical assistance and act as a health education resource across a broad range of settings to promote community health through community building and organizing with identified stakeholders, including community members, consumers, health practitioners and health care providers, policy and decision-makers

4.  Apply principles and skills of leadership and management to human, fiscal, capital, and social resources when administering health education strategies, interventions, and programs

5.  Apply the principles and skills of effective inclusive and multicultural practice when engaging with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities from diverse cultures and backgrounds

6. Apply policy analysis methods and develop an advocacy strategy to advance public health policy.

7.  Advance public health practice and the health education profession by drawing upon historical and contemporary contributions of the field and applying principles of social justice

8.  Adhere to standards for ethical practice and research based on their personal values and mission statements, institutional mandates, and the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession, in order to apply them to fields of public health and community health education.

These eight outcome objectives encompass the areas of professional responsibility delineated by the National Commission on Health Education Credentialing, Inc., and are informed by CEPH accreditation criteria, the Institute of Medicine's recommendations for improving public health professional education, the Association of Schools of Public Health MPH Core Competency Development Project, and the National Health Educator Competencies Update Project. They were revisited, revised, and reaffirmed during our MPH Curriculum Planning Committee meetings held in Summer 2017.
