The hybrid Master of Science in Biotechnology (MBT) program prepares the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and scientific leaders to shape the future of biotechnology and healthcare. Blending advanced laboratory-based biotechnology training with MBA-level business education, the five-semester program equips students with a Spartan Edge to translate discoveries from the lab into real-world impact. Through hands-on scientific experience and course work in biotechnology management, medical product development and business strategy, students develop the technical expertise and leadership mindset needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving biotech industry.

General Requirements

4-year bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited U.S. university.

Minimum GPA 2.5 (last two years of university course work: 3.0 recommended).

A one-page Statement of Purpose.

Two letters of recommendation.
Program-Specific Requirements

Recommended course work for a competitive application includes chemistry, organic chemistry and additional science course work.
Out-of-State Eligibility

Have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or better.

Financial statement as required by GAPE (international).

An English language proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS or PTE) is required if your baccalaureate was earned outside of the US. For more information, visit the graduate admissions site. TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.5 or DET 120 (international).
Graduation Requirements

Students must pass the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR).

Completion of a 2-unit internship in the biotechnology or medical product industry.

Complete a culminating experience in the Biotechnology Colloquium.

Upon completion of the degree requirements, the student must have achieved a minimum candidacy GPA and an SJSU cumulative GPA of 3.0 to graduate.

The Master of Science in Biotechnology program builds on more than 20 years of success, combining advanced biotechnology training with a concentration in Medical Product Development Management.
