Academic Year 2008-09. This is my twelfth and final year as Chair of Communication Studies. My activities this year, in addition to being Chair, focus on professional development for department chairs. I serve as Co-Chair of the University Council of Directors. My academic activities center on developing global citizenship competencies in the SJSU curriculum. As a result of my sabbatical leave in Spring 2008 I am completing the design of a new course on Communication and Global Citizenship. I am a member of the SJSU Salzburg Program Steering Committee, in charge of the Salzburg Scholars Program. I continue my active Study Abroad work and am planning to lead another 3-week summer program to Bath, England in June 2009. Contact me for details.
I currently serve on the Campus Diversity Task Force and the Campus Advising Council Advisory Committee.

Bio
I earned my Ph.D. in Environmental Communication at the University of Utah in 1989. I started at SJSU that same year and became Department Chair in 1996. I have led Study Abroad Programs to Bath, England in Spring semesters of 1997, 2001, and 2007, and a summer program in 2008. I have been attending the Salzburg Global Seminar since 1996, first as an SJSU Salzburg Fellow and then, in 2007, and 2008, as a Visiting Faculty Member for the International Study Program. I have administered a one-month visiting student program for students from Chiba University (Japan) for 11 years, and have visited Chiba 3 times. In 2008 I represented SJSU at the City of San Jose-Okayama, Japan Sister City 50th Anniversary celebrations.
