Joan McMillan was born in Los Angeles, California and attended college in San Diego before moving to Santa Cruz, California in 1981. She is an award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Her work has appeared in many prominent literary magazines, including Poetry, The Chattahoochee Review, Americas Review, Bloodroot, Santa Fe Literary Review, Onthebus, New Millennium Writings, Oyez Review, Santa Clara Review, Paterson Literary Review, and Blue Mesa Review. She has been teaching in one capacity or another for thirty years. Her inspiration is the late Dr. Harvey Birenbaum, a beloved professor and mentor at San Jose State.
