Online Legal Research Tools

[Log on to SJLibrary.org-> https://www.sjlibrary.org/ using your SJSU credentials]

Westlaw:

-Click on Federal Materials, and select 9th Circuit

-Click on Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals

-Enter your substantive search terms and search

-Using the filters on the left side, limit the date range [last 5 years], status [reported], and substance [employment and labor] of your results

-Read the cases to identify those that most relate to your fact situation and choose the best 3 or 4 [remember, you can always modify your fact situation later to improve the fit]

-Repeat these steps for California cases, selecting both California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeals

Pick any 1 of your cases and use it for submitting your Web Firact [see separate link under the Writing Assignments]

Google Scholar:

-Click on Case Law, then select Courts

-Click on 9th Circuit, checking only the Court of Appeals box, and then hit "Done" at the bottom of the page

-Repeat the remaining analogous steps from the Westlaw instructions above when the results come up

-Finally, repeat the entire process for California cases as before.

*For both databases, remember to screen your cases carefully for useful precedential value versus procedural technicalities and the like. Good luck, and happy hunting!
