Yes, San José State is building its very own race car. An ambitious student team known as Spartan Racing aims to burn up the track at the Formula SAE California competition beginning Wednesday, June 17, at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. SAE International (formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers) organizes this annual event to provide students with hands-on experience designing and building vehicles. Like Formula One cars, Formula SAE cars are open-cockpit, open-wheel, single-seat vehicles.
In the coming months, Spartan Racing will finish its car, which is being created by students, applying knowledge gleaned from professors, advisors and industry professionals. This is the first time in recent years SJSU will participate, and the team will face stiff competition from universities from as far away as Sweden, Brazil and Japan, including many veterans with years of Formula SAE experience.
Spartan Racing is housed in the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering but the team seeks to unite students from various majors and departments around campus. There are opportunities for all majors, from business to graphic design, to apply their skills in a real-world environment. The team also seeks corporate sponsors.
