The Tommie Smith and John Carlos Legacy Week Honoring Student Activism will continue through Thursday, October 15. Highlights include "40 Years of Chicano Movement in San José: Student Activism and Organizing," at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, in Engineering 189. The event is free and open to the public.
Panelists include:
- Ramon Jesus Martinez, a National Hispanic University adjunct professor who helped organize the SJSU Grape Boycott Committee and the first SJSU Chicano Commencement.
- Humberto Garza, a retired San José State professor who developed a youth and education task force in San José during the 1960s, training 30 local Chicanos to work as credentialed teachers.
- Roberto Garcia-Ceballos, a student activist who works with campus and community groups nationwide to support legislation for Katrina victims, and to design youth empowerment programs.
- Karla Reyes, a former Associated Students of Evergreen Valley College president who works with various groups that help immigrants access higher education, including Outreach Advocacy and Services for Spanish Speaking Immigrant Students.
- Doreen Nevel, who collects art and archival information on the Confederacion de la Raza; her mother Ernestina Garcia was president.
Jorge Gonzalez, the first Mexican immigrant to serve on the San José Unified School District Board, will moderate. Sponsors include the Associated Students César E. Chávez Community Action Center, Teatro Vision and Movimiento de Accion Inspirando Servicio.
