Rendering of new student union expansion

The Student Union earthquake retrofit and expansion are underway. First up is demolition of the old cafeteria, followed by trucks removing debris beginning the week of September 6. We are making every effort to minimize dust and noise. Please exercise caution, as you would around all construction sites.

In preparation, the AS Print Shop moved to Hoover Hall and Just Below, an sandwich deli with Jamba Juice and Peet's Coffee, opened at MacQuarrie Hall. Also, the Career Center, housed in space to be used for other purposes during construction, moved to Administration 255. Keep in mind the existing Student Union building and all its services will remain open. Recent additions include University Grille for hamburgers and a coffee shop. That means you can still grab a bite at the food court, shop in the bookstore, and hit the bowling alley.

The Student Union project includes earthquake retrofitting the current structure, and building an expansion. Plans call for the new structure to span from El Paseo de Cesar Chavez to the Ninth Street Plaza. The 240,000-square-foot, $64 million structure will include a food court, bookstore, ballroom, Associated Students offices, theater, amphitheater, and resources for student clubs. The three-year project will be funded by bonds, repaid with student fees collected specifically for this purpose.
