Music Matters is an after school music education program hosted by San Jose Youth Symphony, bringing the joy of music to elementary school children throughout San Jose.

Classes are offered for violin, viola, cello, keyboard, trumpet, clarinet, flute, guitar, oboe, bassoon, horn and percussion in addition to Music Appreciation. The classes are small (8-12) students and are held weekly for 45 minutes.

This is a great opportunity for Music Majors, Professional Music Teachers and San Jose Youth Symphony Alumni. We offer a very competitive hourly rate of $30 to $65 per hour depending on experience. Instructors must be accomplished in one or more of the above instruments and have successfully completed a one music theory course. Schools are located in and around San Jose proper. Teachers will have the full support of San Jose Youth Symphony and the schools principal.

If you would like an opportunity to make a difference for children that do not have music programs in their schools, this program is a perfect fit. The curriculum is structured as a two-year program, introductory and intermediate music theory and performance. At the conclusion of this program, the children will be prepared to audition and join the San Jose Youth Symphony.

The Music Appreciation Class is an introductory course that will provide a historical and theoretical overview of music, including notation, rhythm, melody, and harmony as well as listening to music from different periods in history and how it relates to the culture in which it was created, and an introduction to various composers, their lives and work.

If you are interested in this music teaching opportunity, please contact Lisa Fraboni at (408) 316-3815 or lisa_fraboni@yahoo.com

Applicants must be legally able to work in the United States and have a Santa Clara County teaching clearance (Megan Law Clearance). The San Jose Youth Symphony office can be reached at (408) 885-9220 or check out our website at www.sjys.org

Hi everyone,

I've been substitute teaching at Glenbrook Middle School in Concord the last week. They are in desperate need of an 80% time music teacher--2 band classes, 2 music appreciation classes. The teacher they hired left after a few weeks, and I only substitute when I don't have other plans. They definitely need someone asap or they will have to cut the music program at that school. Not a good thing.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, contact the principal directly, Gary McAdam via email (mcadamg@mdusd.k12.ca.us) or phone (925-685-6834 x5404).

Two of the Tri-Valley's most beloved choir directors have announced their departure from Granada High School in Livermore and are informally initiating a search for their own replacements. As difficult as it is for them to leave, the growth in the programs at their other schools in Union City and Livermore have made it impossible for them to continue such a hectic schedule. Although the position at Granada has not been formally posted or announced, interested credentialed teachers, interns or students enrolled in a credential program are highly encouraged to contact the school's principal, Chris Van Schaak, for more details and information. His secretary, Judy Kajiyama can be reached at 925-606-4800. The choir program at Granada is at a serious risk of discontinuing without a qualified teacher stepping in as soon as possible. Feel free to pass this along to someone who you think might be interested.

Warmest Wishes,
Sarah Sloan

    Hello Teachers.

Just to let you know there will be 2 very GREAT choir positions opening up in the district. These are the kind of positions that with the right teacher, he or she could create an amazing career.

A full-time choir position will be opening at both SOTA (School of the Arts) and LOWELL high schools this year.

As you know, I am very interested in having a top notch, experienced choral person in these schools.

If you are interested, or better yet, if you know anyone that is experienced and qualified, and would be wanting to move to SF and have a great music/choral job with total collegial, monetary and administrative support, this is that rare chance to land a job with a mature program in one of 2 great schools.

    Hi Diana,

I hope you and the fellows are doing well. I think of you often. I am in search of a good piano accompanist. My spring concert is Tuesday, May 13th, and my regular pianist cannot make it. Here's what it involves:

    Tuesday May 13:
Dress Rehearsal: 10 am - noon
Performance: Arrive at 6:30. Performance from 7-8 pm.

All of this takes place in Palo Alto. The pianist will be paid $150. I would meet up with the pianist ASAP to give them the music. There are 10 songs they'd have to play, and the concert involves 2nd through 6th grades.

Let me know if you know of anyone good or other places I can seek someone out.

    Thanks so much!

Greetings from Prospect High School. I am very excited to say that we are looking to hire a part time choral teacher at Prospect for the 2008-09 school year. We are looking for a candidate with the ability and drive to grow a choir program with the full support of the administration. There is a strong possibility for the choral program to grow into a full time position quickly. I can say that my experience here at Prospect has been wonderful. I came into the position looking for administrative support in my efforts to grow a music department and I have been met with an incredible amount of support. Administrators have been behind me every step of the way and the parents have supported me unconditionally. I strongly believe that Prospect High School is a place for a young and enthusiastic teacher to feel supported and create their own program.

I would appreciate any help in referring students for this position. Please have them contact me either by email or phone.

    Hello Colleagues:

We have an opening in our district (Los Gatos Saratoga HS District) for a full time band/orchestra director at Los Gatos HS. Many of you are aware that the position has been plagued with some problems during the past few years, but I believe now could be the "launching point" for a great program to match that of many in our area. Last Friday I had a very productive meeting with the following people from our district regarding this position (the meeting was requested by them):

    Doug Ramezane, LGHS Principal
    Markus Autrey, LGHS Assistant Principal
Bob Mistele, LGSUHSD Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources

These three individuals called the meeting to put together and equation for success for a full-time instrumental music teacher. I believe at this point the LGHS program has the potential to explode with the right individual at the helm. The feeder school (Fisher MS) is headed in a very strong direction, as well as our district is investing a lot of time and energy to secure the growth of the program, but of course we all know the most important part of this equation is a dynamic and motivated educator. I know for a fact there are DROVES of students that attend LGHS that play an instrument, yet many are not in the school program...yet! This was a very similar case when I started at SHS 10 years ago. Private lessons and the desire parents have for their children to have a successful metaphor in all endeavors is common in Los Gatos.

Los Gatos is a community that values and supports education and the endeavors of the educators leading the charge. I think the school and community wants a strong band/orchestra program so badly they can almost taste it at this point! It's an educated community that wants participation in CMEA S/E festival, CMEA Band/Orch Festival, County and All-State participation, etc. Just as an FYI, the marching band has been competing in the WBA circuit the past few years.

Attached please find a brief write-up on the position, as well as a copy of the district salary schedule. *The salary schedule does not include the band director stipend(s). Please forward to any colleagues that may be interested in finding a "home" with this position. *I know the district is interested in moving quickly to secure the best possible candidate (they usually firm up hiring here by the end of April), so I'm betting they want to start the interview process within a couple of weeks.

    Thanks,

    Hello,
I was wondering if you post job openings at your program? We are a private elementary school in Atherton and are looking for a music teacher for next year. Ideally, the person would be able to teach beginning band (grades 4 and 5), then music appreciation to middle school students. They should also be able to play the piano to accompany some of our other programs. We would require a BA, with hopefully some teaching experience, even student teaching. We have excellent pay and benefits. Could you please let me know if you could post it? If anyone is interested, they can contact me, the principal, at mmurphy@shschools.org or 650-473-4076.
