If you are ready to take MuEd 370A (credential students & masters students), please sign up for the class. MuEd 370A is Methodology for Music Educators (Elementary, K-8).

Also, if you haven't taken MuEd 140, please sign up now. 140 is required for all MuEd undergraduate students. We will be in a bigger danger of losing classes this year for low enrollment.

Thanks!

Education Through Music-Bay Area
299 Precita Avenue
San Francisco, CA 94110

We are currently searching for teaching artists for our consulting project, the Dominican Schools Music Project, for a K-8 position in Oakland and after school piano/keyboard instructors in San Francisco. We are also accepting applications for an anticipated ETM-Bay Area K-6 general music position in Richmond and future candidates for an internship program (stipend). The Oakland position is full time general music and band. All other positions are part time. All positions begin in September 2009. Applicants should meet most, if not all of the criteria listed in the following descriptions and possess a strong passion for bringing quality music education to diverse student populations.

ETM-Bay Area brings comprehensive, year-long music education programs, led by professional music instructors, into the curricula of schools in disadvantaged areas as a subject in its own right and a means of supporting studentsˇ¦ academic and general development. We believe every child deserves a well rounded education-one which includes music.

Interested and highly qualified applicants should forward their resumes, cover letter and references to Keri Lindell, Executive Director, at klindell@etmbayarea.org

A Teaching Artist will meet the following criteria:

- Bachelor of Arts Degree or an Advanced Degree in Music/Music Education or the Fine Arts
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Experience in preparing for various concerts
- Has reliable transportation to teaching location
- Experience working with middle school aged students highly desirable
- Experience working with general music and choral classes preferred
- For the Oakland position, knowledge of Catholic liturgy desirable
- Knowledge of Orff and Kodaly methods desirable, willingness to train for them within the program necessary.
- Strong classroom management and lesson planning skills
- Willingness to connect music instruction to other subjects in school curriculum through learning about and implementing the ETM curriculum model.

After School program teaching artists should have a Bachelorˇ¦s or Advanced Degree in their discipline or significant performance and teaching experience in that discipline.

Teaching experience for band directors needs to include planning rehearsals and concerts, instruction on woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments, an ability to teach beginning elementary students with little music reading experience, and the ability to coordinate with school principals and music teaching artists for performances and follow through on student attendance.

Salary commensurate with experience and position

I am a parent volunteer Enrichment Coordinator at Parkview Elementary School in south San Jose. With increasingly diminishing funds, we are trying to keep music in our school. I am wondering if perhaps you know of someone who would be interested in teaching at our school for next school year. We have 26 classes from Kindergarten through 6th grade. We would like for each class to receive roughly half an hour of music, roughly each week, for about 20-25 weeks during the school year (between the hours of 8:45 and 2:45, at the music instructor's convenience; 12-13 hours/week). We are looking for someone who is creative and good with kids, has a big repertoire of folk music etc., and would be able to help teachers with theme-related music as well as straight music education for the children. We could pay about $30/hour.

Do you know of anyone who might be interested and able to take this on? I would certainly appreciate your help. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Arti Nigam

Hello everyone. It's that time of year again--the bay section conference! The dates are Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17 with a set up day on Thursday, January 15th.

For those of you who are new, the conference is held on campus, and basically music educators from the bay area come, give lectures, go to sessions, see vendors, go to reading sessions, etc. Our job as the music education students is two-fold: first of all, to volunteer our time on Friday and Saturday to make sure all the necessary equipment in all the rooms being used (these vary from rooms in the music building to the Engineering Building, the Student Union, and other buildings) and be available for emergency issues if a lecturer needs something that they did not anticipate for. Second of all, you should all attend the conference anyway because it will give you networking opportunities and go to sessions for FREE.

Thursday the 15th involves us getting together and getting all the equipment each session needs and making sure that all rooms will be unlocked and all electronic things work, to post signs around campus to guide people to the right places, and make sure the music building is clean and presentable.

Here is what we need in terms of your volunteer time:

Thursday the 15th: 15 people from noon-5 pm. There will be lunch provided at the beginning.
Friday the 16th: 15 people from 7am-noon; 15 people from noon-5pm. Lunch will be provided.
Saturday the 17th: 15 people from 7am-noon; 15 people from noon-5pm. On this day there will be a special collegiate lunch round table discussion section with a guest music educator.

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR A SHIFT. This is 5 hours of your time during winter break, and we need everyone's participation for the conference to run as smoothly as possible. There is a spreadsheet posted on the glass of the Music Ed Shadow Box, which is right outside the entrance to room 150, around the corner from Diana's office. If you have ANY questions, feel free to email me back, or talk to me in the halls if you see me around. Once we get the shifts filled up we will have a meeting to discuss schedules and our responsibilities.

Have a happy last week of the semester! Study hard and practice a lot!

    -Rebecca Fielder
