Budgeting for Staff Benefits

The University Budget Office is often asked to provide a staff benefit rate that can be used in conjunction with financial planning and/or in salary reimbursement situations. There is no single staff benefit rate that is applicable to all or even to a majority of cases due to the fact that individual employee benefit costs can vary widely.

In most recent years, the costs of employee benefits — in particular health care premiums — have risen dramatically. This has resulted in even greater variances in individual employee benefit costs. This hinders the determination of a meaningful average staff benefit rate for the university.
