Program Description

The objectives of our RUMBA Program are to:

  • Increase the number of underrepresented minority and female undergraduate students doing biological research,

  • Form and support a cohort group of undergraduate researchers who will be engaged in biological research for ten weeks in the summer,

  • Develop a short laboratory course focused on the applications of molecular biology techniques to investigate problems in varied biological fields,

  • Expose our cohort to various scientific communities, and

  • Expose our cohort to ethical issues in science and engage them in a discourse regarding expected appropriate behaviors in scientific research.

In addition to research, students will participate in the following:

  • molecular biology techniques training,

  • a weekly formal group research meeting,

  • a culminating research symposium.

Students will be expected to write up their work and present at the culminating symposium.  Students will be recruited from San Jose State University (SJSU) and other local undergraduate institutions.  SJSU, the oldest public university in the state of California, is located in downtown San Jose and in the heart of Silicon Valley. The Biological Sciences Department at SJSU occupies a central role in the training of biotechnology professionals in Silicon Valley.
