What is a Geographic Information System (GIS)?
|
|
GIS is a way through computers to better understand the importance of space (aka Geography).
Geography is more than just maps that a GIS (Geographic Information Sytem) allows us to see.
A paper map is merely a static snap shot. Unlike a paper map, GIS allows us to interact with data behind the map.
GIS is the next step in the evolution of maps

What we can do with GIS?
- Display (visualize) the data in a map (2D/3D)
- Retrieve the information
- Finding a location such as address
- Control the display & Navigate map
- Analyze space by combining the data from different sources

|
GIS provides a way of pairing unlikely causes and effects

The GIS Connection...
- Internet mapping (getting from one place to another)
- Store location decisions (how to get the most customers)
- Hazardous Area determination (finding likely dangerous areas)
- Environment (understanding the relationship between man and nature)
