The Delta is a sanctuary for wildlife
Many live and play in the Delta for its natural beauty. It is an important part of the fishing industry with
Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout. Many migratory birds use the Delta as a key resting point on their
journey south as a part of the Pacific Flyway. However, this wildlife sanctuary is increasingly threatened by
human action and the introduction of competing non-native species.
Endangered species are a sign that changes are occurring. As we see increased water salinity, crumbling
levees, and island subsidence, these same changes are not merely coincidence. Species preservation is one
issue. But, perhaps more importantly, if we can get a healthy ecosystem to make nature an ally in
sustainable activities such as filtering the water and preventing major floods, then we need to consider our
impact to nature's network.
